Academy Awards Predictions

Best Picture

  1. The Big Short
  2. Spotlight
  3. The Revenant
  4. Mad Max: Fury Road
  5. Room
  6. Bridge Of Spies
  7. The Martian
  8. Brooklyn

I really think The Big Short has this one, with it’s recent PGA win, it’s almost a sure thing. Though Spotlight and The Revenant seem to be very, very close.

Best Director

  1. George Miller, Mad Max: Fury Road
  2. Alejandro González  Iñárritu, The Revenant
  3. Adam McKay, The Big Short
  4. Tom McCarthy, Spotlight
  5. Lenny Abrahamson, Room

George Miller I think is going to take this one, Mad Max: Fury Road is too strong a force in this race to go home empty-handed in one of the major categories, and I feel they’ll reward it here since Inarritu just won and McKay is too new, though realistically, any of the top three could win here.

Best Actor

  1. Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant
  2. Bryan Cranston, Trumbo
  3. Michael Fassbender, Steve Jobs
  4. Matt Damon, The Martian
  5. Eddie Redmayne, The Danish Girl

This is DiCaprio’s. No one else has a chance.

Best Actress

  1. Brie Larson, Room
  2. Saorise Ronan, Brooklyn
  3. Cate Blanchett, Carol
  4. Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years
  5. Jennifer Lawrence, Joy

Brie Larson is taking this, though Saorise Ronan could be a spoiler if she takes BAFTA, though the combination of Critics Choice, Golden Globe and SAG is almost unstoppable at this point.

Best Supporting Actor

  1. Sylvester Stallone, Creed
  2. Christian Bale, The Big Short
  3. Mark Rylance, Bridge Of Spies
  4. Mark Ruffalo, Spotlight
  5. Tom Hardy, The Revenant

This category is kind of a mess, with Stallone not being nominated for SAG (but Elba taking SAG and not being nominated at the Oscars), yet Stallone has taken the Golden Globe and the Critics Choice Awards (though he isn’t nominated for SAG and BAFTA) so I’m predicting Stallone because he appears to have the momentum but Rylance or Bale could be potential spoilers.

Best Supporting Actress

  1. Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl
  2. Kate Winslet, Steve Jobs
  3. Rooney Mara, Carol
  4. Jennifer Jason Leigh, The Hateful Eight
  5. Rachel McAdams, Spotlight

Alicia Vikander appears to have taken the lead, though if Kate Winslet or Rooney Mara win BAFTA, either one (particularly Winslet, the GG + BAFTA combo is occasionally a winning one) could pull off an upset, yet the momentum, and the awards, appear to be in Vikander’s favor.

Best Original Screenplay

  1. Spotlight
  2. Bridge of Spies
  3. Straight Outta Compton
  4. Ex Machina
  5. Inside Out

Though I don’t think Spotlight is winning Best Picture, I think it’s the only possible winner in this category.

Best Adapted Screenplay

  1. The Big Short
  2. Room
  3. The Martian
  4. Brooklyn
  5. Carol

The Big Short is one of the front-runners in the Best Picture, like Spotlight, I think it’s easily taking this category.
